A Simple Drawing, A Message That Travels Every Mile

April marks Distracted Driving Awareness Month, a reminder of the role focus plays in safe, consistent operations on the road. It also got us reflecting on Timothy’s (son of Mike. B, one of our divers) artwork, submitted through one of our safety initiatives, Drive for Life, highlights the importance of speed limits and road awareness. It is a simple message, but one that reflects a clear reality. Staying focused and managing speed work together, and when one is compromised, so is the other.

In trucking, distraction is not limited to mobile device use. It includes any activity that takes attention away from driving, such as adjusting in-cab controls, reaching for items, eating while driving, or brief lapses in focus. These moments may feel minor, but at highway speeds, even a few seconds of inattention can significantly reduce reaction time and increase risk. That risk becomes more critical when speed is involved. Speed limits are in place to create consistency and give drivers the time and space needed to respond to traffic, weather, and changing road conditions. When attention is divided, that response time is reduced. When speed is added, the margin for error becomes even smaller. This is where distracted driving and speed connect, both directly impacting a driver’s ability to stay in control.

Here at Bulk, safety is approached as an ongoing responsibility, not a one-time requirement. The focus is not only on meeting standards, but on strengthening how those standards show up in day-to-day driving decisions. As part of that approach, the Drive for Life safety poster campaign was introduced to continuously reinforce the need for drivers to avoid anything that could distract them or compromise safety on the road. By involving employees and their families, the initiative brings a more personal and practical perspective to safe driving, turning safety from a requirement into something drivers can connect with on a daily basis

Through initiatives like Drive for Life, we continue to build a safety culture that is proactive, practical, and grounded in real-world driving conditions, reinforcing that maintaining focus is not just about avoiding risk, but about operating with consistency, responsibility, and control every mile.
