What Are Spring Weight Restrictions?

Bulk Carriers

Every spring, changing temperatures and freeze-thaw cycles can weaken road structures across Atlantic Canada. As snow and ice melt, water seeps beneath the pavement and softens the gravel base underneath. During this period, roads can temporarily lose up to 50–70% of their normal strength, making them more susceptible to damage from heavy vehicle traffic.

To protect road infrastructure during this vulnerable period, provinces introduce spring weight restrictions that limit how much weight commercial vehicles can carry on certain roads. These seasonal measures are designed to reduce damage to roads and bridges while the ground is still soft from melting snow and fluctuating temperatures.

On March 8, Prince Edward Island begins its seasonal weight restrictions, a measure implemented each year to help preserve the province’s road network during the spring thaw. During this time, allowable axle weights are reduced on designated roads across the province.

For carriers like us operating on the Island, this can mean adjusting load sizes, selecting alternate routes, or coordinating deliveries differently until normal weight limits are restored. These restrictions are a normal part of operating in regions that experience strong seasonal changes. At Bulk, spring weight restrictions are part of operating responsibly in the regions we serve. While our trucks move freight across Prince Edward Island, Atlantic Canada, and cross-border routes, seasonal regulations like these require careful planning.

Our operations and dispatch teams closely monitor regional updates and adjust routing, equipment, and load planning accordingly. This allows shipments to continue moving efficiently while respecting provincial regulations designed to protect the road infrastructure that keeps goods moving across the region
